I went back to catch the Kelpies after the lights came on. The internal red lighting makes them vaguely demonic and echoes the Chinese mythic "blood-sweating horses". The Kelpie on the right, rearing up as it is, makes it look more menacing and slightly reptilian: closer to the idea of the Water Horse rather than the heavy Clydesdale work horse.
